GETTING STARTED AND THE BASICS

Is this a subscription?

Yes. After years in the meal delivery space (since 2014!) we have continually listened to our clients to understand their needs better and have crafted a customizable subscription offering that we feel will have the greatest impact on their health, wellness, and vitality while remaining convenient and easy to use. Am I getting one of those ingredient boxes or are these ready-to-eat?

Our meals are fully prepared, perfectly portioned, and ready to eat. You can eat it cold or heat it up, but either way, there is minimal labor involved. Everything is cooked fully and any reheat instructions are intended for warming.

Are you 100% Whole30 Approved?

All of our meals are made with Whole30 compliant ingredients with the majority of our meals and snacks being 100% Whole30 Approved. The Whole30 Approved program is a trademarked and formal program with official certification for brands who participate. We also offer a few select meals, snacks, and add-ons that are Paleo-friendly, but not Whole30 compliant. To view which meals are Whole30 Approved, head to the View Menu page and sort by Whole30.

Does the menu change?

Yes, our menu changes every week and has over 40 new items to choose from every single week.

How do I register an account to get started

Head to themodel.modelmeals.com and click “Sign Up” in the upper right corner. Fill in your details and you’re good to go.

I can’t log in to my account

Can the meals be frozen?

Many of our meals are freezer friendly and you can determine what you think will freeze best. Typically things like salads or anything with raw or fresh produce do not freeze well. If you do freeze your meals, we encourage you to transfer them to a freezer safe container.

What makes Model Meals different from the other options?

Model Meals prides itself on sourcing our ingredients in a way that most other companies won’t. Why? Because good quality ingredients sourced in humane and sustainable ways, and grown as naturally as possible cost more. For us, it’s an investment we won’t skimp on. While everyone will tell you that they use the freshest ingredients, you can rest assured that we truly source the best available. In addition, it is our goal to make it easy to eat in a way that makes you feel great. Our meals are free from grains, gluten, lactose, soy, refined sugar, and other artificial ingredients. We most often follow the Whole30 and Paleo diets but our main focus is on using real whole ingredients and preparing them in a way that tastes great and makes you feel like a rockstar.

Is this a service for models?

Absolutely not! The word "model" in Model Meals is about being a role model. A model for how we should nourish and fuel our bodies. A model for how we can better support a sustainable and regenerative food system. A model for how to cook. A model for how to build a conscious business from the bottom to the top. We aim to model an ideal way of eating and living for our clients and to model a supportive and empowering work environment for our team members and vendors. And while eating this way may give you glowing skin, stronger hair and nails, and in some cases a trimmer waistline- our main goal is to model health, wellness, and vitality.

DELIVERY: When, Where, How

Where do you deliver?

This is an exclusive new program with limited availability. We currently deliver to the Southern California area including most cities in San Diego, Orange County, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. Check out our zip code search bar to confirm if we serve your area. We hope to expand this delivery radius to additional cities in the near future. Stay tuned.

When do you deliver?

Deliveries occur on Sundays and Tuesdays between 12pm and 12am PT.

What is the deadline for ordering?

What is the deadline for ordering? The deadline for ordering is Wednesdays at 12pm PT for a delivery on the Sunday after. There is only one order cutoff weekly. You cannot order for one delivery and not the other, however you can choose to skip a delivery in your profile, and that credit will tack on to the end of your subscription.

Where can I receive a delivery?

We deliver to anywhere with a physical address so that means we can deliver to your home, work, hotel, gated community, or military base as long as we have the proper details and directions on your order. As to not disrupt delivery service or to avoid additional delivery fees, please ensure you have provided any codes to help our delivery partner access your community. These notes can be added when you place your order to ensure our drivers know where to leave your meals. We cannot deliver to a PO Box.

Do I have to be present for delivery?

Nope. As long as there is a safe place for your driver to leave your box of meals, then you have nothing to worry about. Note: For delivery related questions on the actual day of delivery, please contact City Express directly. Email is preferred and they can be reached at: support@cityexpressdelivery.com. If you need to call you can reach them at 1 (424) 466-3825. If you have a non delivery day support need, please contact us at info@modelmeals.com.

How will I know when my meals are delivered?

You will receive a text message when your meals leave our facility and another when your stop is next (or 15 minutes away). You will be able to live track your delivery at this point. You will also receive a text when your meals have been delivered.

Can I specify where to leave my meals?

Yes. On the checkout page under your delivery day you can click “edit” and a pop-up will allow you to save your address, phone number, gate code, and delivery notes as desired.

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery is free. Woo hoo!

Can I return my packaging?

At this time, we do not take back ice packs, meal trays or lids, insulated liners, or delivery packaging. We encourage you to reuse, recycle, and compost (as applicable) as often as possible. We appreciate your efforts in helping us to stay as sustainable as we can be.

SUBSCRIPTION DETAILS

What subscription plans do you offer?

We currently offer two meal plans. The Model is our smaller meal plan that includes 5 days worth of food, delivered over two delivery days on Sundays and Tuesdays. Each day comes with one lunch, one dinner, and one snack of your choice. The Model+ is our larger meal plan that includes 5 days worth of food, delivered over two delivery days on Sundays and Tuesdays. Each day comes with one breakfast, one lunch, one dinner, and two snacks of your choice.

Where do I go to select my meals each week?

Each week you can return to your profile at themodel.modelmeals.com and click “Select Meals” to select your meals and snacks. You must select your meals and snacks before the Wednesday at 12pm PT cutoff. If you do not select your meals and snacks, our system will do a random selection for you. You may select your dietary preferences and allergens in your profile and we will always do our best to accommodate them.

How can I change from one plan to the other?

If you need more food or less food, you can change between our two options, The Model and TheModel+ in your profile. Head to your profile and click “My Subscription” then click “Subscription”. Under “Subscription Settings” click “Create” under “Create New Plan” and you can adjust your plan accordingly.

What if I want to buy multiple subscriptions within my household?

In the case that you would like to purchase more than one subscription, you will need to create an additional account with a new email address. There is only one subscription allowed with each account. You may however use the same billing and delivery information for multiple accounts. For example, if you and your partner both want a plan, you’ll each want to set up a profile and place an order independently. This will allow each of you to customize your meal selections individually.

When will I be billed?

Billing occurs weekly on the day you started your subscription, so if you placed your first order on a Tuesday for the delivery on the upcoming Sunday, your card will be billed again the following Tuesday. If you wish to see your next renewal date, you can head to your profile and view this under My Subscription > Subscription.

How do I cancel my subscription?

We’re sad to see you go. You may cancel your subscription by heading to your profile and clicking My Subscription > Subscription and under “Subscription Settings” and under “Request to Cancel” click “Request”. Please include your reason for canceling in the pop-up box as any and all feedback is helpful to us in improving our offer in the future. A customer service representative will respond to you within 1-3 business days (but often much sooner). You must cancel BEFORE you are billed for the next delivery. We cannot cancel orders that have already been processed. We encourage you to reach out as far in advance as possible for cancellations.

But…I don’t want a subscription.

CHANGES TO YOUR ORDER

I already ordered. Can I add on to my order?

If you need to make changes to your order, please reach out to us at info@modelmeals.com and we will do our best to assist you.

I need to change my delivery address.

If you need to change your delivery address for an order that has already been placed, head to your profile and click My Subscription > Subscription and under “Delivery Settings” you can request to change your delivery address. In general if you’d like to update the delivery address on file for your account you can do so by heading to your profile and scrolling down to “My Shipping Address”. Enter your information and click “Save Shipping”

I need to update my credit card and billing information.

If you need to change your credit card and billing information, you can do so by heading to your profile and scrolling down to “My Billing Address and “My Cards”.

It’s past the cutoff time to make changes to my delivery. What now?

We will always do our very best to accommodate you when possible but cannot guarantee changes after the Wednesday at 12pm PT cutoff. Please email us at info@modelmeals.com and we’ll do what we can to help.

MEALS

What are the portions?

Each meal is an individual serving for one person. Our meals typically have 4 oz of protein, 1-2 Tbsp of a healthy fat, and a generous plant-based side. Sometimes we find customers prefer a little more or a little less, but it’s an individual choice. We give you a great start with our meals and you can decide what your body needs or doesn't need in addition to that.

I’m super active and/or I need more food.

For those who desire a little bit more, we suggest grabbing a few of our add-on options to supplement your meals. In the future, we may offer different portion sizes or the option to add-on additional meals.

Do you cater to specialty diets or those with food restrictions or allergies?

If you can buy something from our site, then it is made with Whole30 and Paleo compliant ingredients. Ingredients are listed for all items, and if you have specific questions please contact us directly at info@modelmeals.com We encourage you to input your dietary preferences and dislikes into your profile. This does not mean we will make modifications to your meals, but it will help our technology to assign you meals based on your preferences when you do not choose them yourself.

Can I alter your meals or substitute proteins?

While we love offering options that our customers look forward to, we aren’t able to substitute or switch out ingredients or proteins in the meals you see on our menu. We’ve made improvements by packaging things like nuts and sauces separately to make it easier for those ingredients to be set aside and offer a rotating list of proteins each week to keep things fresh and varietal. Instead, we encourage you to add your dislikes or allergies to your profile.

How many calories are in your meals?

Here's the thing: all calories are not created equal and therefore that makes them a less than ideal way of measuring how healthy your meal is. Two hundred calories of avocado acts very differently in your body than two hundred calories of cheese puffs. Instead of focusing on calories, we focus on ingredients and nutrients, which is why we tell you absolutely EVERYTHING that we use to create our meals. We pride ourselves on transparency and are happy to answer any questions you may have. We are constantly educating ourselves on the most current nutritional information and we work closely with nutritionists to ensure we are providing the proper portions and nutrient balances. That being said, every body is different and the greatest teacher of what you need is you. If you are hungry, by all means EAT. Just make sure that your hunger isn't of the emotional variety and, if it is, we suggest exploring outlets that can help you address emotional eating like a certified nutritionist, licensed therapist, or finding a program that can provide you with the support you need to help heal your relationship with food. Tell me about the packaging.

Your meals are delivered in a Model Meals insulated box packed with ice packs to keep it cold for 36 hours from packaging time. Our compostable meal containers are 100% plant-derived, allergen free, and non-toxic. They are 100% gluten-free and both oven* and microwave safe. Our products are made from a variety of compostable materials, which currently include: compostable PLA plastic made from cornstarch, wheat straw, and sustainable paper alternatives. Wheat allergens are associated with the actual berry, while our containers are made from the stock fibers. The lids are made from PET plastics and are highly recyclable and have been studied significantly for many years, proving them to be the safest form of food grade plastics. *Lids are NOT oven/microwave safe. In addition, per the manufacturer, best practice is to remove the meals from PLA laminated containers and place the contents in an oven safe dish. Although PLA is derived from renewable, natural resources, we choose to err on the side of caution because, as we're sure we can all relate, we're busy people and can sometimes forget what's in the oven.

FOOD FACILITY + SOURCING

Where is the food made?

All meals are prepared and cooked in our commercial kitchen space, located inside the 4th Street Market in Santa Ana, CA. Our chefs are certified by ServSafe and we follow all health code requirements to ensure your food is handled with caution, care, and love.

Are you certified gluten-free?

No. Here is why: We do not use gluten in ANY of our meals and everything we sell is gluten free. Then why aren't we certified gluten free? The kitchen space that we use is a shared space that allows other businesses to prepare their foods in the kitchen space nearby. Because we do not have 100% control of what other tenants bring into the kitchen, we cannot guarantee that their gluteny goodies haven't graced the same gluten-free counters that we work on. We CAN promise you that everything we cook with is gluten-free and at no time do we use gluten in our production. Our kitchens are professionally cleaned in between foodmakers so the chances of cross contamination are very low. Our compostable containers are plant-derived which partially comes from the stock fibers in wheat, and are gluten free. See packaging FAQ for more info.

Are you certified organic?

We are not 100% organic. Here's why: many small farms lack the funding or resources to pay the hefty fee for the official "organic" certification, and the process can take years. While we do our best to source locally AND organically, sometimes we choose one over the other based on what we think is best for our customer. We do commit to sourcing all items on the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list organically.

Where do you get your produce?

We do our very best to source our produce organically and locally. Our menus are created based on what is seasonal and available.

Where do you get your meat?

Responsibly-sourced meat is a non-negotiable for us. The compassionate treatment of farm animals is incredibly important to us, as well. That is why we put care into our procurement choices and are transparent about our suppliers, all of whom are committed to ensuring animals have a humane life.

All Model Meals meat products are humanely/sustainably-raised, non-GMO, and free of antibiotics, hormones, nitrates, and sugar. In addition, we follow the specific guidelines below when it comes to each variety:

*Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness POULTRY: Pasture-raised (meaning the birds are free to graze on a pasture with access to both fresh air and shade). Learn more about our Certified Humane chicken at: PastureBird, and sustainably farmed NON-GMO chicken at :Jidori. Learn more about our GAP Certified turkey at: Diestel Turkey Ranch and regenerative farmed pasture-raised turkey at: Ferndale Market EGGS: Pasture-raised (meaning the birds are free to graze on a pasture with access to both fresh air and shade). We typically source our eggs from Gonestraw Farms and Mike & Son's Egg Ranch. PORK:Pastured (pigs graze freely on pasture with access to both fresh air and shade). Our GAP Certified pork typically comes from Rancho Llano Seco. BEEF/LAMB/BISON/GHEE: 100% grass-fed, grass-finished. Our Certified Humane beef typically comes from Mariposa Ranch, our lamb from Emigh Ranch, our bison from Durham Ranch, and our ghee is made from Organic Valley Butter (ALWAYS ORGANIC: Absolutely NO antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides or GMO anything.) SEAFOOD: All seafood is wild-caught or sustainably-raised. We follow the Monterey Seafood Watch list to keep up to date on the healthiest options available. Our wild Alaskan sockeye salmon and wild pacific cod typically comes from Santa Monica Seafood. *For Southern Californians looking to purchase responsibly-sourced meat products, we highly recommend electric city butcher, located in Santa Ana, CA at the 4th street market*

OTHER QUESTIONS

Do you offer gift cards?

Gift Cards are available under the “Order” tab on our site. Please keep in mind that TheModel by Model Meals is a service only available to the Southern California area. If you would like to gift Model Meals to someone outside the Southern California territory, please visit our national website to purchase a gift card there.

I was part of your loyalty and rewards program previously before you switched to subscription. What now?

Our loyalty and rewards program is no longer available for TheModel, as we’ve packed even more savings into our meal plans, including free delivery. Loyalty points will be available for our national offerings and you’ll need to set up an account at national.modelmeals.com using the same email you used for your account previously with our local model. While we no longer have our tiers program, you will retain your loyalty points to be used on the national site. Should you have questions about your loyalty and rewards, please don’t hesitate to reach out at info@modelmeals.com.

Will I lose weight?

You might. When you shift to eating whole, real, nutrient-dense foods, your body may start to function more efficiently as it gets used to your nutrition changes. While weight loss can be a side effect of eating more whole foods it would be impossible for us to guarantee weight loss, as each of us has a different body composition and lifestyle.

What’s all this Whole30/Paleo Stuff? I’m just trying to eat healthier.

We know we talk a lot about our Whole30 & Paleo meals, and that is because we have experienced the positive influence food can have on one's life and believe in the power of eating a real whole-food based diet. With that being said, we create our meals to be delicious and nutritious regardless of your dietary preferences. Our meals are a convenient and delicious option for anyone who wants a nutrient-dense meal but is short on time. We want to help build sustainable habit changes from a place of nourishment rather than restriction, with meals to meet you where you are to reach your goals.
